WHAT IS
INTARSIA?
It is a mosaic of wood, fitted
and glued into a wooden support. The ancient art of intarsia
inspired both marquetry and wood-inlay and works of this sort are found
in ancient histories as far back as the eighth century. Intarsia
was originally made by sinking shapes into a rep-arranged design, the
hollows then being filled with pieces of different coloured woods.
Today, Sidlaw Woodcrafts uses a
whole range of hardwoods and its aim is to show the qualities of the
materials with which it is working, to best advantage. In the
designs, some of the pieces are raised to give a 3D effect to the
plaques and special dyes are sometimes used to further enhance the
designs which have been specially chosen to give pleasure. |
Some
of the hardwoods used in the making of the plaques are:-
ash, elm, sycamore, padouk, American black walnut,
cherry, whengie, purple heart, mahogany, teak, American oak, British
oak, bubinga, chestnut and many more
All the hardwoods used in my
plaques have been kiln dried to a level where they will neither shrink
nor crack when hung in the warmth of a home. |
